My ears HURT

First time I've seen the band live. Was simply blown away, very tight, very powerful. No fancy lights, no flashpots - just a great rock n roll band.

Loads of newer stuff played. Was sort of expecting Showdown and Cool Cody. Not a criticism though, cause I thoroughly enjoyed all the show. Raise Your Hands was a highlight for me.

Canny few technical problems. 2 bust strings. If anyone taped the show, Mexico will sound different. Mostly played with 5 strings so it sounded different / unique.

Long Tall Sally featured. Not heard that before. Are there any shows in circulation to feature Sally?

I thought that the merchanidise was pretty naff (crap to non-uk fans). But I did buy a purple T shirt. How do I explain that to my Mrs?

So impressed that I'm thinking of doing Manchester. How do I explain that to my Mrs?
:(

I looked for tapers but didn't see any. Anyone know if the show was taped.

Anyway, pretty knackered now. A few glasses of wine while I listen to my IPOD (RHD of course) are in order. More tomorrow.

Cheers

archive.org has some copies of shows with Long Tall Sally

I recorded the Tuts gig, with permission so there will be a sbd/aud matrix upped to the archive as soon as I can get it sorted.
The gig totally rocked, and the sound was the best I've heard from a rock gig at Tuts.
Both recordings sound decent.

I got Nate's handwritten setlist (woo-hoo!!) and his new shorter "do" suits him very well

Just decided to go to Manchester as well; I'll probably take a rest from taping cos it's already well covered by the legendary Humbug 8)

A matrix - whooooooooooo - can't wait. Thanks for ypur efforts - much appreciated. Suppose a cover could be fashioned from the handwritten setlist? Not by me though - I'm well aware of my limitations

I can't do artwork, but I'll include scans of the setlist and a ticket, with the post.
Hopefully some kind person who took pics could help out ?

Manchester Roadhouse - an early set in a small basement club.
Folk suddenly came out of the woodwork for RHD - Black Hand, the support act played to about 20 people, most leaning on the bar.
I enjoyed their set a lot.
RHD came on about 7.30 and played for about 70 mins. Some folk arrived late and were disappointed when they came offstage about 8.40.
Curfew was 9pm as there was a club afterwards
No setlists that I could see (shock !)
I think they played:
Altar Junkie
A Better Way
One Night Stand
Godfather
Raise Your Hands
[ ? Message to Love - a total stormer 8) ]
Trans Am
Sneak Out
Mexico
Reptilian Blues/ ? jam
Communication Breakdown
------------
Do You Wanna Get High

Good acoustics, excellent live sound by Ryan.
A hugely powerful, energetic set, big quite drum-heavy sound, musically very clear with vocals a bit lower in the mix than at Tuts.
Jake's lovely bass playing was well heard.
Daniel........ well, what can I say 8)
I love this band !!
The set was taped :D
It was great to meet up with Humbug again, and two folk whose forum names I don't know.
At least with the early finish, there was time for a meal and I still got home before it got light 8)

I've uploaded my photos here:

First 18 are of Rose Hill Drive. Feel free to use them, I've not edited them yet, a couple I may brighten a little. I saw Daniel put his set list down before they started, but never thought to take a photo of it! Cool Cody was played in Glasgow.
I'd like a gig recording if possible too :D .

Prologue:

I've been taping this band for a couple of years, they are my favourite band, and to boot, seem incredibly modest for their huge talent.

I've cocked up far more recordings than any other band though, and was determined this was going to change.

I'd already had two gigs on the trot, recording Tokyo Dragons last gig (came out OK, Gambo), supporting Girlschool, at the 100 Club then a low-key gig at the Water Rats seeing indie rock band, Nine Ashes.

So on Saturday morning I was a little tired, as I made my way to Euston. The train boarded late, and saw us take a huge diversion over to the West main line, then finally the Chiltern line, before arriving in Crewe a few hours later. Steve picked me up in his new toy, an M reg camper van.

Manchester, 6th September

Arrived in the centre to a huge downpour, and met Jake on the way in, where I also met a couple of huge RHD fans who seem to be doing the whole of the UK leg of the tour.

For some reason the gig was an early one, and the venue staff could not have been nicer when I asked to record. I set up the stand right in front of the board, and went about wiring up my two rigs. While this was going on, The Black Hand were sound checking. Cave Troll and Sharon came over and chatted. Ryan was also around, he's an incredibly friendly guy, and seems to enjoy RHD tours immensely.

The Black Hand came on about 6:30 and ran through their heavy rock set.

RHD came on about an hour later, and due to the curfew had just a 75 minute set. But what a set, probably the best I've seen them..could be just it's been so long since they were over. I sat at the back for the most part as I was suffering from sore feet. Ryan did a nice job with the sound at this venue. Afterwards Steve, Sharon and I went for a meal in the Chinese quarter.

Part 2, Wolverhampton Little Civic

If last night was great, this was amazing.

We got horribly held up on the M6 heading south from Crewe, and during a visit to a curry house, managed to miss both supports, arriving in the venue around 9pm.

I knew from a previous visit that the venue would have a different feel, and sure enough, as I set up the stand, I was approached by a very large bouncer who asked me what I was doing - taping - I replied. For who? For me. Sorry - not allowed mate. Please have a word with Ryan behind the merch stall.

Sure enough Ryan comes over, and with a few words sorts out the situation. I continue kneeling on the floor, wiring up the stand, as the stale beer seeps slightly into my knees. Moving the stand forward a few feet to get better sound, I witness the first UK "Band Of Gypsies" show.."I hope you don't mind if we play somebody elses stuff, we're kinda tired of our songs right now".

1. Trans Am >
2. Sneak Out
3. Alter Junkie
4. Godfather
5. Who Knows
6. Machine Gun
7. Them Changes
8. Power Of Love
9. Message To Love
10. Raise Your Hands
---encore---
11. I'm On To You

Just how good was "Machine Gun".

Incredible playing, and again nice sound, I'm listening right now. Of course these shows will be upped, just not sure exactly when..

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread. Although I've seen RHD it feels like I can still be part of the experience though reading your posts and reviews. Cheers - very enjoyable.

Just seen the photo's too. NICE :D

Part the three..will keep it brief 'cos very tired.

London

Tonight was the second UK Band Of Gypsies shows.

Again I got grief from the venue, trying to open tape by clipping my little mics to a light fitting above the bar. The promoter told me she probably wouldn't allow it, so I waited for an hour for her decision. As it didn't come, I started recording anyway. After the gig, I returned to my gear to find it all unplugged..luckily I had stealthed it dead centre with my second rig.

The band played a fuller set tonight, probably 20 minutes longer than the last couple. The small venue was pretty full, and cheered the band onto two encores. Last song played was Showdown, can't remember the rest.

Signing off,

Humbug.

haha read my posts above..as far as I know, all UK dates have been taped so far. The band allows audio recording, but is not terribly keen on video.

Check archive.org for numerous live recordings.
